Accra, July 30, GNA – Bulgaria has stated that genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could offer a viable solution to the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, according to a joint communiqué issued after talks between the foreign ministers of the two countries.
The position was expressed following a telephone conversation on Tuesday between Bulgaria’s Foreign Minister, Velislava Petrova-Chamova, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita.
According to the communiqué, Bulgaria, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, recognizes that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty could constitute a viable solution” to the dispute.
The statement further noted that Bulgaria regards Morocco’s 2007 autonomy initiative as a “serious, credible and realistic basis” for achieving a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement of the Sahara issue.
The Bulgarian position comes as Morocco continues to garner international support for its autonomy proposal, which seeks to grant broad self-governing powers to the region while maintaining Moroccan sovereignty.
Officials said the stance reflects the growing strength of bilateral relations between Morocco and Bulgaria and underscores increasing international backing for Morocco’s position on the Sahara question.
The communiqué also highlighted the commitment of both countries to further deepen cooperation and strengthen diplomatic ties across areas of mutual interest.
