Ledzokuku MCE assures residents of prompt evacuation of waste after clean-up exercise

Ledzokuku, July 11, GNA – Mr Israel Adjei Otchwenmah, the Ledzokuku Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), has assured residents that all refuse collected during the National Sanitation Day exercise will be promptly evacuated to prevent secondary pollution and maintain a clean environment.

Mr Otchwenmah said the assembly had put in place measures to transport all waste collected from drains, roadsides and public spaces to the Zoompak transfer station for proper handling and disposal.

He gave the assurance on Saturday during the municipality’s participation in the nationwide sanitation exercise.

He explained that the transfer station was fully operational and served as a collection point where waste would be compacted before being transported to its final disposal site.

Although a large volume of waste had been generated during the exercise, the MCE assured residents that the assembly would continue working until all refuse had been cleared.

He commended residents, community groups and other stakeholders for responding positively to President John Dramani Mahama’s call for the National Sanitation Day exercise.

“The level of participation demonstrates the commitment of residents to promoting environmental cleanliness and protecting public health,” he said.

Mr Benjamin Narteh Ayiku, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, urged residents to make environmental sanitation a daily responsibility rather than relying solely on government-led clean-up exercises.

Mr Ayiku said maintaining clean surroundings should become part of the routine of every household to prevent environmental degradation and reduce the risk of flooding.

The MP expressed concern over the indiscriminate disposal of refuse into drains and waterways, describing it as one of the major causes of flooding in the municipality.

He recalled that recent heavy rains displaced many residents after choked drains caused floodwater to overflow into homes, destroying household property, important documents, and children’s educational materials.

Mr Ayiku appealed to residents to desist from dumping refuse into drains and instead participate actively in regular community clean-up exercises and adopt proper waste disposal practices.
