Islamist groups carry out attacks on towns in northern Mali

Bamako, July 5, (dpa/GNA) – Terrorists attacked several towns in northern Mali, the military said on Saturday in a brief statement.

There were attacks on Gao, Aguelhok, Anefis and Séfaré as well as armed incidents 60 kilometres from the capital, Bamako.  By early afternoon, the military said the situation was under control and more than 20 terrorists had been “neutralized.”

Images and videos showing the bodies of uniformed fighters and burnt-out motorbikes were shared on social media. In April, Islamist terrorist group JNIM carried out attacks on several Malian towns and the defence minister of the military government was killed.

These were the first coordinated attacks by JNIM and Tuareg militia FLA since they ended their enmity.  JNIM is the Sahel branch of the al-Qaeda terrorist network.
