Berlin, July 26 (dpa/GNA) – Investigators in Berlin are treating the fatal incident at the Pride parade as an Islamist terrorist attack, German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has said, noting that all evidence points to this conclusion.
The German-born suspect is believed to have been radicalized and to have been part of an Islamist milieu, based on initial findings, Dobrindt said on Sunday.
The man used a machete after the van ramming attack, leaving one woman dead and 29 people injured, some seriously, he said.
The suspect had previously been given a suspended sentence of one year and ten months. The public prosecutor’s office had lodged an appeal against this, the minister said.
The suspect is a German citizen who was born in Germany in 2005 and is of Lebanese origin, with a mother who was naturalized in Germany in 2002.
