Accra, July 6, GNA – Hajia Faiza Seidu Wuni, wife of former National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) Chief Executive Officer, Mr Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, has filed an urgent habeas corpus application challenging her husband’s continued detention.
The application, filed on July 6, 2026 before the High Court seeks the immediate release of Mr Abdul-Wahab.
According to an affidavit sworn by Hajia Wuni, her husband was arrested by armed men who identified themselves as BNI operatives at the Accra International Airport on July 4, 2026, while preparing to travel to the United Kingdom for medical treatment.
She said Mr Abdul-Wahab, who is standing trial on charges of stealing and causing financial loss to the State, had earlier been granted leave by the High Court to travel to London for treatment of what she described as a worsening eye condition.
The court order, according to the affidavit, required him to depart on or before July 4 and return to Ghana by July 14, 2026.
The affidavit said Mr Abdul-Wahab had completed all immigration and pre-departure formalities before he was approached by the armed operatives and taken into custody without any explanation.
Hajia Wuni deposed that her husband was denied the opportunity to speak to his lawyer at the time of his arrest.
She said family members subsequently contacted several security agencies in an attempt to ascertain his whereabouts but were initially informed that none of the agencies had him in custody.
According to the affidavit, the family later learnt that Mr Abdul-Wahab was being held at the BNI headquarters at Ridge in Accra.
The applicant alleged that when she attempted to deliver food to her husband at the BNI headquarters, officers declined to accept it, explaining that visitors were not permitted on weekends.
She also claimed that lawyers representing Mr Abdul-Wahab were denied access to him when they visited the facility, with officers reportedly indicating that they had not received the necessary clearance.
The application follows public comments made by Deputy Attorney-General Dr Justice Srem-Sai, who, in a Facebook post on July 4, said Mr Abdul-Wahab’s arrest followed an alleged attempt to access funds in a frozen Republic Bank account through improper means.
Dr Srem-Sai further indicated that the Attorney-General intended to seek a review of the High Court order granting Mr Abdul-Wahab permission to travel outside the country.
However, Hajia Wuni, in her affidavit, disputed those assertions, saying her husband denied attempting to withdraw funds from any frozen account and challenged the State to provide evidence in support of the allegation.
She argued that her husband’s arrest and continued detention violated his constitutional rights to personal liberty, freedom of movement and access to legal representation.
The applicant was therefore praying the High Court to order the AG to produce Mr Abdul-Wahab before the court and justify the legal basis of his detention.
