Adaklu Waya (V/R), July 2, GNA – Several communities in four electoral areas in the Adaklu District have been cut off from Adaklu Waya, the district capital, following the overflow of the Tordzie and Waya rivers after days of torrential rainfall.
The affected communities are Adaklu Anfoe, Adaklu Kpodzi, Adaklu Torda, Adaklu Sofa, Adaklu Akpatovoe, Adaklu Ablornu, Adaklu Avedzi, Adaklu Hlihave, Adaklu Seva and Adaklu Kpeleho.
Mr Vincent Yao Kottoh, Assembly Member for the Adaklu Sofa Electoral Area, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Adaklu Waya that the flooding had disrupted transportation and access to essential services in the affected communities.
He said students of Adaklu Senior High School and workers residing in the affected communities were unable to travel to school and their workplaces because of the flooded roads and river crossings.
Mr Kottoh said the situation was also taking a toll on economic activities, as farmers and traders could not transport foodstuffs and other goods to market centres.
He added that several farms had been inundated by floodwaters.
He noted that although Adaklu Ablornu is about 10 kilometres from Adaklu Waya, residents now have to travel through Mafi Kumase and Adaklu Tsriefe before reaching the district capital.
He said residents of Adaklu Anfoe and Adaklu Kpodzi, located only two and three kilometres respectively from Adaklu Waya, now have to travel through Akuetteh, Ho and Ziavi before accessing the district capital through Adaklu Abuadi.
Mr Kottoh described the situation as time-consuming, stressful and financially burdensome for residents.
“The most pathetic one is that the people of Adaklu Anfoe and Adaklu Kpodzi which are just two and three kilometres respectively from Waya now have to go through Akuetteh to Ho and Ziope to Ho before going to Waya through Adaklu Abuadi,” he stated.
He urged people living near the rivers to move to higher grounds.
A source close to Rolider, the contractor working on the Adaklu Tsriefe–Waya–Keyime road project, told the GNA that the prolonged rainfall was also slowing construction activities on the road.
