Erbil, Iraq, July 21 (dpa/GNA) – Erbil International Airport temporarily suspended all arriving and departing flights on Tuesday evening, following drone attacks targeting the city and its airspace, airport authorities said.
Airport director, Ahmed Hoshyar, told dpa that flights had been halted due to “a wave of attacks targeting the city of Erbil and its skies.””Flights will resume as normal once the security situation returns to normal.
This is only a temporary measure,” he added. Meanwhile, a security source in Erbil said air-defence systems at the US consulate in the capital of Iraq’s Kurdistan Region intercepted four drones that were attempting to target the compound. The source, who requested anonymity, told dpa that the drones were shot down before reaching their targets.
According to the source, security authorities were investigating the incident without providing further details, saying the fourth drone targeting the US consulate was intercepted over Erbil by air-defence systems.
