TEHRAN, July 9 (Xinhua/GNA) – Several explosions were heard Thursday night in Iran’s southern provinces of Bushehr and Sistan and Baluchestan, the semi-official Mehr news agency reported.
According to the report, two blasts were heard in Bushehr and three in Sistan and Baluchestan.
Meanwhile, Iran’s official news agency IRNA quoted Mohammad-Younes Haghani, governor of Konarak County in Sistan and Baluchestan, as saying that two explosions occurred at an Iranian Navy military site in the county, after it was targeted by “enemy” fighter jets.
Haghani said representatives of the relevant organizations, rescue teams and security forces have been deployed to the scene, and an investigation into the attack is underway.
Speaking to IRNA, Ehsan Jahanian, Bushehr’s deputy governor for political and security affairs, said the explosions heard in the province were due to the air defense’s “timely response,” which prevented an attack by U.S. drones.
He added that an “enemy projectile” struck the outskirts of Bushehr, but no casualties have been reported yet.
Shortly after the explosions, CNN, citing an unnamed U.S. official, said the U.S. military “is not currently conducting strikes.” So far there has been no official comment issued from the U.S. side.
The developments came as the United States and Iran traded fresh attacks from Tuesday night through Thursday, marking a new round of escalation.
Allegedly in response to recent Iranian attacks on commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, the United States launched strikes against multiple targets inside Iran over the past days, resulting in casualties and infrastructure damage.
In retaliation, Iran launched missile and drone strikes on U.S. military bases and facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Jordan.
