Accra, July 02, GNA- Residents of Damang in the Western Region have taken over a new solar-powered water supply system expected to provide safe, clean water to the community.
The project, funded by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation in partnership with World Vision Ghana, was officially handed over on Tuesday at a ceremony attended by traditional leaders, community members, local government officials, and representatives of both organisations.
The system includes newly drilled and rehabilitated boreholes, a 100-cubic-metre reservoir, solar-powered pumps, an extensive distribution network, standpipes, household connections, and dedicated supply points for schools and health facilities.
Focus on health, education, and sustainability
Officials say access to clean water is expected to reduce waterborne diseases, improve healthcare delivery, and free more children, especially girls, from long hours of water collection.
“More than just a water project, this provides a foundation for better health, quality education, economic opportunity, and a brighter future for the entire community,” a joint statement from the partners said.
To ensure sustainability, water and sanitation committees have been established, local technicians trained, revenue collection systems introduced, and water quality monitoring mechanisms put in place.
Community commitment
Community leaders thanked Gold Fields Ghana Foundation and World Vision Ghana for the intervention and pledged to protect the infrastructure for future generations.
“For us at Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, this reflects our commitment to ensuring that communities around our mining operations benefit from meaningful and sustainable development,” the Foundation stated.
World Vision Ghana, the implementing partner, said the project was designed with a strong focus on improving the well-being of children and families.
With the handover complete, locally established governance structures will now manage the system, with both partners pledging continued technical support.
The Damang project offers a practical model for how private sector, development partners, and communities can collaborate to address Ghana’s water access challenges.
