Accra, July 21, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday, met with global health leaders – Madam Winnie Byanyima, the UNAIDS Executive Director and Madam Joy Phumaphi, the Executive Secretary, African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA), for high-level talks on strengthening public health across Africa.
A statement issued by the Presidency said at the heart of the discussion were the Accra Reset, President Mahama’s bold vision for an Africa that produced its own vaccines, building resilient health systems, and moving beyond aid dependency toward true self-reliance.
President Mahama also shared exciting progress on Ghana’s Free Primary Health Care programme, now giving every Ghanaian access to free basic care at Community-based Health Planning (CHPS) compounds and polyclinics, with no insurance card required, as Ghana accelerated toward Universal Health Coverage.
Madam Byanyima praised President Mahama’s leadership in championing health sovereignty for Ghana, Africa, and the Global South.
This comes as Accra hosts the AU Extraordinary Summit on health, bringing African leaders together to chart a bold path toward justice, equity, and better health outcomes for all.
