Glasgow (Scotland), July 30, GNA – Ghana will look to build on its early success at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Thursday after a mixed opening six days that have produced two medals.
Para-athlete Zinabu Issah secured country’s first podium finish after winning silver in the women’s shot put T57.
Another medal is assured, after Mohammed Amadu advanced to the semi-finals of his event, guaranteeing himself at least a bronze medal.
Amadu is the only surviving boxer for Ghana and he would certainly target gold as he faces Australian Jye Dixon in the semis on Friday.
However, one of Ghana’s leading medal prospects, Rose Yeboah, narrowly missed out on a podium place in the women’s high jump, finishing fifth after clearing 1.82 metres.
Ghana’s campaign has also been highlighted by a breakthrough performance from Hayford Addai, who became the first Ghanaian T47 sprinter to officially break the 11-second barrier.
The 17-year-old clocked 10.99 seconds in the men’s 100m T47 final to finish fifth, improving his previous personal best of 11.09 seconds.
Elsewhere, Forrester Osei placed fifth in the men’s 94kg weightlifting final.
Attention now turns to Day Seven, where Ghanaian athletes would compete in athletics and weightlifting as they seek to add to the country’s medal tally.
In weightlifting, Abdul Salim Adjei would compete in the men’s 110kg final, while the athletics team would be led by Evonne Britton in the women’s 100m heats.
Ghana would also have a strong presence in the men’s 200m semi-finals, with James Dadzie, Joseph Paul Amoah and Mustapha Bokpin all advancing to the semis.
Having missed out on a medal in the men’s 100m, Ghana’s hopes would rest on the sprint trio as they attempt to secure places in the final and challenge for podium positions.
