Accra, June 11, GNA – Mr Ismail Ali Horoya, Greater Accra Zongo Caucus Coordinator of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his decision to establish E-block Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Senior High Schools in Zongo communities across the country.
He described the initiative as a significant step towards expanding access to quality STEM education and promoting digital inclusion in underserved communities.
Mr Horoya, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the intervention would help bridge educational gaps and should be embraced by all stakeholders to ensure inclusive and equitable access to education.
He recalled that President Mahama announced the initiative on May 27 during the Eid al-Adha National Prayer Session held at the Black Star Square in Accra.
The schools would bring quality STEM education closer to deprived communities, particularly Zongo areas, and reduce the long distances many students travel to access such facilities.
The President also announced plans to rehabilitate road networks in Zongo communities, beginning with Koforidua Zongo, with similar projects expected to be replicated nationwide.
Mr Horoya, who is contesting for the position of National Coordinator of the NDC Zongo Caucus, said the proposed projects would transform both the educational landscape and infrastructure development in Zongo communities.
Touching on land availability for the projects, he said there were suitable locations for their implementation, including the site of the uncompleted Senior High School near the Kanda Cluster of Schools and an area within the Kawokudi enclave.
He appealed to Zongo chiefs and community leaders to support the initiative by making land available and facilitating its successful implementation.
Mr Horoya noted that STEM education was critical to national development, as it equipped young people with the skills needed to participate effectively in the digital economy.
“As Coordinator for the Zongo communities, I will engage chiefs and opinion leaders to intensify public education on the initiative and secure broad-based support for its implementation,” he said.
He also urged parents to prioritise the education of their children and wards, stressing the importance of investing in their future through quality learning opportunities.
