Vicenza: Nurse couple rescues 13-month-old boy on plane, ‘inadequate onboard kit’

Vicenza, June 2, (Vsn/Adnkronos/GNA) – Traveling on a plane bound for Marrakech, two Vicenza emergency room nurses rescued a 13-month-old boy under respiratory arrest on board a Ryanair flight from Bergamo. “The child was cyanotic, hypotonic and in respiratory arrest, probably due to an airway obstruction due to febrile seizures” say the two at the ‘Giornale di Vicenza’.

After the deconstruction of the airway, the two nurses began the procedures of resuscitation in the ‘old way’, with mouth-to-mouth breathing and cardiac massage in the narrow corridor of the plane. “The on-board medical kit was inadequate, explained the couple.

The self-expandable balls were free of the relative face masks. One of the two oxygen cylinders was unloaded and the only mask available was not good for the children. The automatic defibrillator was then configured exclusively for adults and pediatric mode could not be set.

All shortcomings that once on the ground were reported by the pair of nurses to the airline.
