Russian Deputy Foreign Minister discusses US-Iran deal with Gulf Envoys – Foreign Ministry

Moscow, June 18 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko discussed the US-Iran memorandum of understanding with a group of ambassadors from member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

The meeting was attended by the ambassadors of Bahrain, the UAE, and Oman, the charge d’affaires of Kuwait, as well as representatives of the diplomatic missions of Qatar and Saudi Arabia at their request.

“The Russian side stressed the importance of observing the memorandum signed yesterday by the Presidents of Iran and the United States [Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump] with the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar on the cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including Lebanon. Hope was expressed for the speedy restoration of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz,” the ministry said in a statement.

The main focus of the meeting was on the Middle East agenda, with an emphasis on the military and political situation in the Persian Gulf, the statement added.

“Prospects for further cooperation within the framework of the Russia-GCC strategic dialogue mechanism were considered,” the ministry said.

Overnight into June 18, Iran and the US remotely signed a memorandum that provides for an end to the military conflict that began on February 28. The memorandum also sets a timeline for the US to lift its naval blockade and for Iran to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

In addition, Iran commits not to acquire nuclear weapons, while the issue of Iran’s nuclear program is to be resolved through a separate agreement. The two sides are expected to hold negotiations on the matter over the next 60 days. For Tehran, the desired outcome is the lifting of sanctions imposed on Iran.
