Accra, June 15, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has accepted the resignation of former Chief Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo, as a member of the Council of State.

Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidential Spokesman and Minister of State in-charge of Government Communications, confirmed this during a press briefing at the Presidency in Accra.

“I can confirm that former Chief Justice Sophia Abena Boafoa Akuffo has resigned from her position as a Member of the Council of States,” he said.

“She submitted a letter in September 2025 to the President indicating her desire to resign. She did not disclose the reason for wanting to resign.”

The Minister said when the President received the letter, he was required to indicate his acceptance of the resignation, but he had to hold on with the acceptance at the behest of the Council of State to engage Justice Sophia Akuffo to see if there was some grievance that she had and whether or not there was a way that it could be addressed.

He said the Council got back to the President that they had engaged with the former Chief Justice and that there was no bad blood between them, and that her resignation could be accepted.

“So, the President has formally accepted a/her resignation and she is no longer a member of the Council of States,”

Mr Ofosu said President Mahama would soon announce the replacement of Justice Akuffo on the Council of State.
