Tema, June 10, GNA — Pregnant women have been advised to maintain a well-balanced diet to support their health and that of their unborn babies.
Madam Anita Kwantrah, a Registered Nurse Assistant at Okanta Medical Centre in Ashaiman, said proper nutrition during pregnancy was essential for the healthy growth and development of the foetus.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), she explained that a balanced diet provided the mother with sufficient energy to cope with the physical demands of pregnancy while supporting the baby’s growth and brain development.
She said pregnant women required essential nutrients such as iron, calcium, protein, folic acid, and omega-3 fatty acids to promote healthy development and reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy.
According to Madam Kwantrah, iron-rich foods such as leafy green vegetables and fortified cereals help the body produce red blood cells, which supply oxygen to the baby and help prevent maternal anaemia.
She encouraged expectant mothers to include foods such as eggs, beans, poultry, nuts, and fish in their diets to ensure adequate nutrient intake.
Madam Kwantrah further advised pregnant women to attend regular antenatal clinics, where they could receive guidance on proper nutrition and other aspects of maternal health.
She said healthy eating habits during pregnancy contributed significantly to positive outcomes for both mother and child.
