Accra, June 16, GNA – A United States Immigration court has granted former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, permanent residency.
The decision follows the court’s approval of his Green Card (Form I‑485) petition.
A statement issued on Tuesday and signed by Justice Kusi Minka-Premo, solicitor for Mr Ofori-Atta, said the ruling came after the court reviewed matters relating to actions taken by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
It said the court considered issues including the decision to declare Mr Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice at a time when he was reportedly undergoing medical treatment in the United States, while his legal team remained in communication with investigators in Ghana.
The statement further indicated that the US court did not find the criminal charges brought against him in Ghana to be “credible.”
However, it clarified that the ruling was delivered strictly within the context of United States immigration proceedings.
“The court’s decision was focused on whether Mr Ofori-Atta met the legal requirements for adjustment of status,” it said.
