Police said, while Indian television stations broadcast images of the building on fire and people trapped on the upper floors throwing themselves on the mattresses placed on the street.
The fire, one of the deadliest in the Indian capital of recent years, occurred in a densely populated neighborhood in the south of the city.
According to reports by the Press Trust of India news agency, which cites officials on condition of anonymity, many victims were foreigners, mainly from Central Asia and Africa.
The foreign ministry is “in close contact with the embassies concerned, and is providing all the necessary assistance,” Deputy Foreign Minister Kirti Vardhan Singh said on X.
According to the nearby hospital, eight people are in critical condition. “My condolences to those who have lost loved ones,” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a statement.
