GPHA to engage stakeholders on next phase of Keta Port project

Tema, June 17, GNA — The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) will on Thursday, June 18, hold a stakeholder sensitisation forum in the Keta Municipality to discuss the next phase of the proposed Keta Port project following the approval of its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The engagement is expected to bring together traditional authorities, local government officials, investors, business groups, community leaders and other stakeholders to provide updates on the project and explore opportunities for investment and collaboration.

The forum follows the recent approval granted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the project’s Environmental Impact Assessment, a key requirement in the development of what is expected to become Ghana’s third commercial port.

Stakeholders at the forum are expected to discuss the project’s anticipated socio-economic benefits, environmental considerations, and the role of local communities in its successful implementation.

Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, Director General of the GPHA, has described the approval as a significant milestone in the Authority’s strategic vision to expand Ghana’s maritime infrastructure and strengthen the country’s position as a regional trade and logistics hub.

According to the GPHA, the approved EIA provides the basis for advancing discussions with potential investors and other partners required for the implementation of the project.

The final EIA report and permit were recently presented to the Director General by Coastal and Reclamation Engineering Services Ghana Limited, the consulting firm that undertook the environmental assessment.

Major General Tanye-Kulono commended the consultants and engineering teams for their professionalism and diligence in delivering an assessment that met all regulatory requirements.

He noted that the Keta Port project forms part of GPHA’s broader agenda to modernise Ghana’s port infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and enhance the country’s competitiveness in international trade.

The proposed port is expected to complement operations at the Tema and Takoradi ports while creating new opportunities for trade, investment, and employment.

The project is also anticipated to stimulate economic activity within the Volta Region and surrounding areas through improved logistics services, business expansion, and increased commercial activity.
