Accra, June 24, GNA – Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz has questioned the effectiveness of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) following his side’s goalless draw against England at the Boston Stadium.
The Portuguese tactician expressed strong concerns over what he described as a “clear penalty” that was not awarded to Ghana after Prince Kwabena Adu was brought down by England defender Ezri Konsa in the second half.
“By the way, I think it is the right opportunity because I’m not sure if VAR is still working in the World Cup. We still have VAR.
“It’s working? I have some doubts about that because another penalty that they need to give to Ghana, a clear penalty against England,” Queiroz said.
Queiroz also cited another incident involving a counterattack, insisting that the England goalkeeper’s challenge on a Ghana forward Adu warranted a red card.
Despite his frustrations, the coach admitted that the draw was ultimately a fair result, noting that both teams had their moments.
“With our opportunity in the second half, I think at the end, different profiles, but we deserve the draw.
“The draw was a fair result for both teams. So now, four points. We have to keep going, looking for our qualification to the second round. That’s what I have to say about this game.
The Ghana coach maintained that his side would continue to fight for qualification, emphasising that every point matters in what he described as one of the toughest groups in the tournament.
The Black Stars who are most certain to book a place in the Round of 32 would close out their group stages campaign with their match against Croatia at the Philadelphia Stadium on Saturday.
