Bolgatanga, June 23, GNA – Mr Elvis Figo Awonekai, the Upper East Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Regional Chairman of the party in the region.

In a statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Awonekai said he was ready to lead the party through a period of rebuilding and repositioning following its electoral defeat.

He stressed that the time had come for the party to unite, restructure, and reclaim political power.

“It is not the time to retreat after defeat; it is time to rise, restructure, and reclaim power,” he stated.

Mr Awonekai expressed appreciation to the current regional executives for their service, sacrifice, and selflessness, and pledged to build on the foundation they had established.

Mr Awonekai has been a long-standing member of the party, serving as a Polling Station Secretary and Chairman before becoming a Constituency Communications Officer and Constituency Information Technology (IT) Coordinator.

He was elected Deputy Regional Secretary in 2018 and served as Regional IT Coordinator before being elected Regional Secretary in 2022 and later becoming a Parliamentary Candidate.

According to him, his experience at various levels of the party has equipped him with the knowledge and understanding needed to provide effective leadership for the NPP in the Upper East Region.

Mr Awonekai outlined three priority areas he would focus on if elected Regional Chairman: party unity, resource mobilisation, and the strengthening of the party’s youth, women, research, and communications wings.

On unity, he said his experience across the party structure had given him a deep understanding of the challenges facing the party and positioned him to bridge divisions and strengthen constituencies ahead of the 2028 general elections.

He also pledged to leverage his networks and mobilisation skills to secure and distribute resources to polling stations, electoral areas, and constituencies across the region to support early campaign and organisational activities.

Mr Awonekai further underscored the importance of the youth, women, research, and communications wings to the future of the party, promising to restructure and strengthen them through training, membership drives, research, and strategic communication initiatives.

He said he would engage stakeholders across the region in the coming weeks as part of his campaign and called on party members to support his bid.

Mr Awonekai is contesting on the campaign message of being “Experienced, Accessible, and Fearless,” which he said reflects his commitment to listening to party members and providing strong leadership in opposition.
