Zonta Club of Accra II awards scholarships to 20 girls

Accra, May 13, GNA – The Zonta Club of Accra II has selected 20 girls from the Teshie Salem Presbyterian Primary A and B schools as beneficiaries of the second phase of its Girls Scholarship Programme.

The girls, mainly needy but brilliant pupils in Primary Four, would receive continued support from the Club through to Junior High School and beyond, depending on their academic performance.

Presenting the cheques to the headmistresses of the schools, Mrs Merley Wood, President of the Club, said the amount of GHÂą5,600.00 would cover uniforms, exercise books, extra tuition and other educational needs of the beneficiaries.

She said the presentation marked the third disbursement made to the school authorities under the scholarship scheme.

Mrs Wood noted that the Zonta Club of Accra II had, over the past 11 years, sponsored six girls to pursue tertiary education in universities across the country through the initiative.

The Club is a branch of Zonta International, which empowers women and girls through education and advocacy through its network of professional women and entrepreneurs.

Members of the Club who accompanied Mrs Wood interacted with the girls and reviewed their exercise books to assess their academic performance.

Through mentoring, reading programmes, institutional visits and excursions, the Club aims to enhance the education and development of the girl-child.
