Accra, May 1, MAP/GNA – The United States has reaffirmed its recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, underscoring its support for a lasting political solution to the long-standing territorial dispute.
Speaking at a press conference in Rabat after talks with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State, Mr Christopher Landau, said: “The United States recognizes Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara.”
Mr Landau noted that the United States was working within the framework of the most recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 to advance a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
“This situation cannot wait another 50 years or 150 years or 200 years to be resolved,” he said.
During the meeting, the U.S. official reiterated Washington’s continued support for Morocco’s autonomy proposal, describing it as “serious, credible and realistic” and “the only basis for a just and lasting solution to the territorial dispute over the Sahara.”
Mr Landau also emphasized U.S. support for American companies seeking to invest and conduct business activities in the Sahara, highlighting economic cooperation as part of broader bilateral relations between the two countries.
The meeting forms part of ongoing consultations between Morocco and the United States aimed at strengthening political, economic and strategic partnership ties.
