Diari (NR), May 19, GNA – A 32-year-old man accused of being gay from Diari, a muslim dominated community in the Northern Region is gone missing as family members cannot trace his whereabouts.
The suspect was last seen at Daa Fong, a suburb of Diari when a group of young men from the community invaded his family house and accused him of being gay and sodomising one Mohammed Tihiru who is also in his 30s from a neighbouring community.
Fearing for his life, he was assisted by a cousin to escape through a back door in their family house to hide until the tensions calmed in the community.
However, since he left the house last April, his family has not heard from him, neither has any community member volunteered information on his whereabouts, fearing that he could have been lynched by some youth from the community.
When the GNA contacted the family, his uncle said he earlier reported the incident to a Muslim cleric in the community to try to calm the youth and to investigate the accusation raised against the suspect. “The next day, we looked for him to appear before the elders, but we could not find him, after searching through all the villages around Diari”
He said the family later went to report the matter to the Ghana Police Service at Diari only to be told that somebody bearing the suspect’s name had made complaint about threats on his life, adding “the police could not trace details of the complainant, which increased our suspicion that he could have been secretly lynched or gone into hiding in the Upper East, Ashant or Bono East Regions.
His uncle denied any such untoward behaviour his nephew was accused of, and said, “I doubt this accusation. I know that the two people being accused are good friends, but they could not have been engaging in such abominable acts”
The Diari police confirmed receiving complaint from one Iddriss on May 5, 2026, and told the GNA that he (complainant) was asked to come next day to assist in investigations. However, the number the complainant left at the post in his statement could not be reached after several call attempts.
