Dzodze (V/R), May 15, GNA-Some store owners in Dzodze in the Ketu North Municipality have expressed concern over the increasing rejection of 20 pesewa coins by members of the public during daily transactions.
The traders say the practice is affecting business operations and creating difficulties in giving customers change.
Madam Janet Adika, a store owner, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that she faced the challenge almost every day as many customers refused to accept the coin after purchases.
According to her, the rejection cuts across all age groups, including students and adults.
She explained that whenever she gave out 20 pesewa coins as part of customers’ change, many rejected them outright, forcing her either to lose money or spend extra time looking for higher denominations.
“The strange thing is that I also accept the same 20 pesewas when customers give it to me, but when I give it out, people act like it is not money,” she said.
Madam Adika noted that the 20-pesewa coin remained legal tender in Ghana and continued to be important for small-scale transactions in shops and markets.
She said the constant rejection of the coin contributed to shortages of small change and slowed down business activities within the township.
Other traders who spoke to the GNA shared similar concerns and appealed to the public to appreciate the value of all Ghana cedi denominations currently in circulation.
They stressed that refusing the coins only created inconvenience for both traders and customers.
“Please accept the 20 pesewas. It is still money, and it helps all of us,” Madam Adika appealed.
The traders further called on the media and relevant authorities to intensify public education on the acceptance and use of all legal tender denominations to help address the challenge.
