Accra, May 18, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama will on Monday deliver the keynote address at the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland.

A statement issued by the Presidency said this was at the invitation of Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

It said at the airport, Mrs Nane Annan, the wife of Mr Kofi Annan, the late former UN Secretary-General, joined Dr Tedros to welcome the President to Switzerland.

Mrs Annan took President on a tour of the Kofi Annan Lounge at Geneva Airport, a space dedicated to the memory of the former Ghanaian diplomat.

The statement said a central pillar of the President’s address would be the “Accra Reset Initiative,” a project he champions to promote “health sovereignty.”

It said President Mahama was expected to challenge global leaders to rethink the positioning of the Global South, particularly amid significant cuts to international donor funding.

It noted that his speech would emphasise the urgent need for developing nations to build self-reliant health systems.

The statement said President Mahama would also hold bilateral meetings and host an Accra Reset side event on the theme, “Geneva Clarion Call.”
