Police arrest 50 in Madina anti-narcotics operation

Accra, May 9, GNA – The Inspector General of Police’s Special Operations Team has arrested 50 suspects during an intelligence-led anti-narcotics operation at the Madina Market enclave in the Greater Accra Region. 

The operation, conducted on May 7, 2026, led to the retrieval of suspected narcotic substances and related items valued at about GH¢200,000.00. 

Commissioner of Police (COP) Mr Teye-Cudjoe, Director-General of Operations, disclosed this during a media briefing in Accra on Friday. 

He said the suspects comprised 46 males and four females arrested during the exercise. 

“Preliminary screening of the suspects established the following nationalities: twenty-five being Ghanaians, thirteen Nigerians, nine Nigeriens, one Malian, one Togolese and one Burkinabe,” he said. 

COP Teye-Cudjoe identified two of the suspects, Abigail Oko, aged 26, and Mohammed Zaya, a Nigerien, as kingpins within the criminal network. 

Additionally, two suspects, Yusif Abubakar, aged 25, and Amadu Alfani, aged 43, both Nigeriens, were identified as shop owners engaged in the sale and distribution of narcotic substances, he said. 

Items retrieved during the operation included 230 boxes of Tramadol valued at GH¢130,000.00, 49 boxes of wrappers valued at GH¢26,000.00, 10 parcels of Indian hemp valued at GH¢15,000.00, 13 boxes of crushers, mobile phones, pairs of scissors, knives and other suspected narcotic-related materials. 

COP Teye-Cudjoe said the estimated street value of the recovered exhibits was GH¢200,000.00. 

He said all 50 suspects, together with the recovered exhibits, had been conveyed to the National Operations Directorate Headquarters for further investigations and necessary action. 

The Ghana Police Service, COP Teye-Cudjoe said, would continue to conduct targeted operations against the supply, distribution and peddling of narcotic substances in markets, communities and public spaces across the country.
