NDPC Chair urges shift to three-dimensional growth model

Accra, May 28, GNA – Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC), has urged Ghana to adopt a new three-dimensional growth model that balances GDP expansion with employment creation and wage growth.

Speaking at the Ishmael Yamson & Associates (IYA) Business Roundtable 2026 in Accra, Dr Thompson argued that reliance on GDP alone masked structural weaknesses and failed to capture real improvements in citizens’ welfare.

“Growth without jobs is meaningless. Growth without rising incomes is unsustainable,” he stressed.

Dr. Thompson noted that while the informal sector accounted for about 80 percent of employment, it contributed only 27 percent of GDP, underscoring the need for productivity, formalisation, and value addition.

He also called for stronger alignment between national development plans and budgetary allocations to improve policy execution.

Delivering the welcome address, Mr. Ishmael Yamson, the CEO of Ishmael Yamson and Associates, urged Africa to move beyond the “Africa Rising” narrative and focus on aggressive execution and wealth retention.

He warned that extractive growth models leave little value within African economies and called for deeper collaboration under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
