Accra, May 5, GNA – Medical services have resumed at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital following the suspension of a one-day industrial action by the Korle-Bu Doctors Association (KODA).
A visit by the Ghana News Agency to the hospital’s Surgical Department and Maternity Outpatient Department (OPD) Tuesday morning confirmed that doctors had returned to their consulting rooms and were attending to patients.
Madam Rosemong Mensah, a caregiver, expressed relief at the resumption of services.
“My dad cannot afford to miss his appointment,” she said.
Mrs Ruweida Boampong, a pregnant woman, also shared her frustration over the disruption in service delivery.
She recounted visiting the hospital on Monday to begin referral processes ahead of her expected delivery this week, only to be turned away due to the absence of doctors.
She welcomed the swift resolution, noting that the resumption of services would allow her to continue preparations for her delivery without further delay.
The strike led to a complete halt in services at the OPD as doctors protested what they described as “an operational and policy dispute over access to laboratory space and the definition of professional roles within the hospital’s central laboratory.”
The disagreement reflects longstanding tensions between medical doctors trained in laboratory medicine and laboratory scientists, particularly regarding authority, allocation of workspace, and leadership of laboratory units.
The swift return to work is expected to ease pressure on patients who rely on the facility for critical and routine care.
