Akosombo (E/R), May 03, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has climaxed his two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region with inspection of ongoing upgrading of the 32km Akosombo-Gyakiti Road in the Asuogyaman District.

The 32km feeder road project, which began in December 2025, and is expected to be completed by December 2027, is being executed by the construction firm M/S Mmanab Company Limited.

The President after inspecting the 32km Akosombo-Gyakiti Road addressed a durbar of chiefs and people at Agina.

He noted that the vision of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President was to ensure that all Ghanaians had access to development, including electricity, and that the Akosombo Dam stands as a symbol of that vision.

He said Ghanaians must also remember that the communities that were relocated during the construction of the dam did not immediately benefit from electricity, and that it was during former President Jerry John Rawlings’ regime that electricity was connected to such areas.

President Mahama said it was only right that such communities continue to benefit from development in recognition of the sacrifices they made for the nation.

He said he was aware that under previous arrangements, there were contracts awarded for about four kilometres of road, but the expected results were not delivered.

The President said, he was, however, encouraged by the performance of the current contractor, who had demonstrated capacity and commitment to the work.

He said development was not limited to roads alone but included other infrastructure that improves the lives of the people.

“Your Member of Parliament, Honourable Thomas Nyarko Ampem, who also serves as Deputy Minister for Finance, will work to ensure that by the end of 2028, the development concerns of this area are addressed,” President Mahama said.

At the event, some schoolchildren were holding placards expressing appreciation to the government for numerous educational projects the area was now benefiting from.

President Mahama said he was informed that schools in Akwamu had benefited from projects supported by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), which was part of the government’s efforts to improve educational infrastructure.

He said the contractor working on the Akosombo-Gyakiti Road had a good track record, and that he was confident that the work would be completed to a high standard.

He commended all those involved in the project and further assured the chiefs and people of Asuogyaman that the Government would continue to support development in the area.

The President on day one of this two-day Resetting Ghana Tour of the Eastern Region, which began on Friday, May 1, 2026, cut sod for the construction of a multi-purpose Hall and Hostel at the SDA College of Education in Asokore-Koforidua, and address the National May Day Parade at Jackson Park in Koforidua.

He continued day two with a sod cutting for the construction of the 24-Hour Economy Model Market at Asesewa in the Upper Manya Krobo District and subsequently commissioned the Krobo-Odumase Divisional Police Headquarters at Laasi in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality.

On day two, the President first held citizens’ engagement in Koforidua, during which he engaged directly with citizens, chiefs, religious leaders, opinion leaders, students and artisans.

From Koforidua the President and his delegation moved to inspect on-going construction works on students’ hostel facilities at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development in Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipal District.

The President then ended the two-day Resetting Ghana Tour with the inspection of ongoing construction works on the Akosombo-Gyakiti Road.
