Newtown, May 28, GNA — Nene Tetteh Charway II, Chief Fisherman of the Kpone Traditional Area, has appealed to the government to construct a landing beach in Kpone and Prampram to improve fishing activities and reduce congestion along the coast.
Nene Charway II said the current landing area used by fishermen had become overcrowded with canoes, making movement difficult and negatively affecting the daily activities of fishers who depend on the sea for their livelihood.
He made the appeal when the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Madam Emelia Arthur, visited the Tema Newtown Canoe Fishing Basin. He suggested that the proposed landing beach could be established at the Laloi Lagoon.
According to him, fishermen often struggle to move their boats because the existing landing area is heavily congested.
The Chief Fisherman stated that the project would improve access for fishermen and support economic activities in the area, adding that many residents in the two coastal communities depend on fishing, fish processing, and fish trading for their survival.
He noted that fishing remained one of the main occupations in the area, explaining that while fishermen go to sea, women wait along the shore to buy and process fish for the market. He, however, indicated that overcrowding at the landing site had created challenges for both fishermen and fish traders.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture assured residents that the government would undertake the necessary interventions to construct a landing beach for the people of Kpone and Prampram.
She explained that the government was currently mobilising resources to support national development projects, adding that the budget for the current fiscal year had already been approved.
Madam Arthur, however, indicated that provisions for the landing beach project could be considered in the next budget cycle.
