Kumasi, May 12, GNA – The Management of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has appointed Ms. Comfort Asoogo as the new Director of Nursing and Midwifery Services, effective May 1, 2026.
Ms. Asoogo, an Oncology Nurse Specialist and Fellow of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, previously served as Deputy Chief Nursing Officer at the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the hospital.
Her appointment is viewed as recognition of her outstanding contributions to oncology nursing, paediatric cancer care, research, and nursing leadership in Ghana and internationally.
Ms. Asoogo holds a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Cape Town, a Bachelor of Science degree in Oncology Nursing, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing Administration from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology.
She also earned a Paediatric Oncology Nursing Associate Certificate from the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives, a Diploma in General Nursing from the Kumasi Nurses and Midwifery Training College, and a Certificate in Community Health Nursing from the Tamale Community Health Nursing Training College.
Over the years, Ms. Asoogo has built a strong international professional profile through membership in several global health and oncology organisations, including the International Union for Cancer Control, the African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer, the Oncology Nursing Society, the International Society of Paediatric Oncology, and the Advanced Breast Cancer Global Alliance.
She currently serves as an executive member and Nurse Lead of the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana and also acts as Nurse Lead for the World Health Organization Global Initiative on Childhood Cancer.
Her dedication to academic excellence and cancer care has earned her several scholarships, fellowships, and international recognitions. In 2009, she was inducted into the Golden Key International Honour Society for academic distinction.
Among the notable awards she has received are the Seed Grant for Cancer Health Systems Research (C/Can) in 2023, the SPARC (Seeding Progress and Resources for the Cancer Community) Award in 2017, and the prestigious National Cancer Institute/NIH Fellowship on Cancer Prevention Summer Course in 2013.
She also received the Margaret McNamara Education Grants for women from developing countries while studying at the University of Cape Town in 2010, alongside an International Travel Scholarship from the same institution.
Earlier in her career, she benefited from a Government of Ghana and KATH-sponsored bursary in 2007 to pursue specialization in Oncology Nursing in South Africa.
Ms. Asoogo has conducted extensive research in cancer care, with several publications and presentations at international conferences, contributing significantly to advancements in oncology nursing and paediatric cancer treatment.
Management of KATH congratulated her on the appointment and expressed confidence that her leadership, dedication, and expertise would further strengthen nursing and midwifery services at the hospital.
