Accra, May 6, GNA – Mr Kurt Edwin Simeon‑Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged the Black Starlets to approach the 2026 U‑17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco with resilience, unity, and belief, urging the team to restore Ghana’s dominance in youth football.

Addressing the players and technical team during a brief farewell, Mr Simeon‑Okraku called on the squad to carry a “never say die” spirit into the tournament, stressing the importance of mental toughness, especially in difficult moments.

“I’m very happy that when you lost to Ivory Coast in your first game during your friendly matches, you were able to come back—not only to dominate but to outscore them in the second game,” he said.

“I read a lot of meaning into that, and I want all of you to keep that in your heads—that it’s not over until it’s all over.”

The GFA President described the Starlets’ qualification as a turning point for Ghana football after years of absence from the competition and urged the players to seize the moment.

“For years, we have not been able to qualify for the AFCON, but you have done it this time,” he said. “This year is a year of turnaround for Ghana football, and it starts with you. I have absolute confidence in this team and the quality your technical team has put together.”

He challenged the players not only to qualify for the FIFA U‑17 World Cup but also to aim for continental success.

“Don’t just go there to qualify for the World Cup,” he added. “Put Ghana back where we belong by winning the competition. Believe in yourselves and you can do it.”

The GFA President also reminded the squad of the responsibility that comes with wearing the national jersey, urging them to remain united and supportive of one another when the pressure mounts.

“When the chips are down, that’s when we need to hold each other together,” he said. “You are carrying the hopes of millions of Ghanaians. Go out there, play with courage, stay disciplined, and make the nation proud.”

He further expressed confidence in the technical team, noting that their preparation and guidance would be key to success at the tournament.

The Black Starlets would compete in Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa, with their opening match scheduled for May 14, 2026.
