Accra, May 30, GNA – The Accra Circuit Court 10 on has sentenced a driver to 10 years’ imprisonment in hard labour for illegally possessing 40 compressed narcotic drugs with a net weight of 19,153.40 grammes.

Christopher Angmotey Partey denied the offence but was found culpable after trial.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Issah Achiburi, narrating to the court, said the complainants in the case were personnel of the National Highway Patrol Department.

Partey, now a convict, is a driver, and on June 11, 2025, personnel of the aforementioned unit, whilst on duty on the Accra-Somanya Highway, stopped a Ford Transit mini bus at Ayernya near Ayikuma with registration number AS 524-16.

ASP Achiburi said upon a search conducted in the vehicle, the officers discovered a fertilizer sack concealed in the boot of the aforementioned vehicle.

When the sack was retrieved and opened, it was found to contain a total of 40 compressed, oval-shaped pieces of cannabis, he told the court.

The prosecution said Partey admitted ownership and was arrested.

In his cautioned and charged statement given to the police, Partey mentioned one Stephen as the one who sent him to deliver the sack and its contents to one Felix at Madina. However, he could not assist the police to arrest the said Stephen, the court heard.

The exhibit was sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for testing, the police said.

ASP Achiburi said on October 7, 2025, a test report received from the Police Forensic Science Laboratory through CID Headquarters Administration proved all the exhibits positive for cannabis with a total net weight of 19,153.40g.

Based on the strength of the evidence, the convict was formally charged with the offence.
