Bongo (U/E), May 01, GNA – Mr Charles Bawaduah, the Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency, has cut sod for the construction of several key development projects in the area.

The projects include the construction of three mechanised boreholes at Feo Market, Bongo Senior High School, and Gowrie Senior High Technical School, as well as a Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compound at the Gorigo-Asaloko community.

The move is expected to help alleviate the persistent water shortages affecting the beneficiary communities and boost the delivery of improved water supply, healthcare, and education in the district.

Additionally, the MP, who is also a member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Water and Sanitation, donated 2,100 mathematical sets to the District Directorate of the Ghana Education Service for onward distribution to candidates sitting for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the sod-cutting ceremonies, Mr Bawaduah said the decision to prioritise water projects was informed by concerns raised by residents during the election campaign period towards the 2024 general election.

“By far, the most common issue we encountered across the communities was the lack of potable water. We see this as a major priority because water is life,” he stated.

In addition to the mechanised boreholes, he said the Assembly was undertaking the installation of 17 hand pumps in underserved communities in the district.

“Also, an NGO is providing 10 hand pumps for us, while the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority has provided two hand pumps. So, in total, 32 water facilities are expected to be delivered to improve access to safe drinking water across the district,” he added.

Additionally, the MP noted that the construction of the CHPS compound at Gorigo-Asaloko was intended to bring healthcare services closer to residents in deprived and hard-to-reach communities.

Mr Bawaduah noted that out of 52 CHPS zones in the Bongo District, less than half currently have functioning facilities, making the expansion of health infrastructure a pressing need.

He said the CHPS compound was expected to be completed within six months, with funding from the District Assemblies Common Fund.

In the area of education, the MP announced plans to complete a long-abandoned three-unit classroom block at Akulyoo, while also commissioning a newly completed three-unit classroom block equipped with desks and other learning facilities.

He reiterated his commitment to improving the living conditions of constituents, emphasising that the projects reflect the needs and priorities expressed by the people.

Mr Bawaduah also raised concerns about water distribution challenges in the district, noting that he was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure that Ghana Water Limited takes over the distribution of treated water from the Vea Dam to Bongo.

Naaso Batur, the Headmistress of Gowrie Senior High Technical School, commended the MP for the intervention, and noted that the borehole would contribute to resolving the water crisis in the school.
