Ashaiman Assembly Inaugurates Committee for 24-Hour Market Redevelopment

By Emmanuella Owusu

Ashaiman, May 8, GNA — Mr Freeman Tsekpo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ashaiman, has inaugurated a 10-member committee to lead a comprehensive data collection exercise ahead of the redevelopment of the Ashaiman Main Market into a modern 24-hour trading hub.

The committee has been tasked with completing, within one month, a full registration of all traders operating in the market, including those occupying shops, sheds, tabletops, and floor spaces.

Speaking during the inauguration, Mr Tsekpo said the exercise was intended to ensure transparency and safeguard the interests of existing traders. He explained that the verified data would serve as the official basis for reallocating stalls after completion of the new market facility.

“This data is very important for us to build trust,” the MCE stated, assuring traders that “nobody who is currently trading in the market will lose the place that he or she sells.”

Mr Tsekpo said the redevelopment project forms part of efforts to position the market as a centre for a 24-hour economy. Planned additions to the new facility include essential services such as a fire station, police post, and improved lighting to support round-the-clock commercial activity.

The committee comprises representatives from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, the Traditional Council, the Office of the Member of Parliament, technocrats, and market women.

Although the assembly has identified temporary trading spaces for use during the construction period, Mr Tsekpo noted that the locations would remain undisclosed until all stakeholders reached a final agreement to ensure a smooth relocation process.

Supporting the initiative, Mr Simon Amui Tete, Administrator of the Ashaiman Divisional Council, expressed the council’s full support for the redevelopment project.

He said that despite previous developments in Ashaiman, the municipality had long needed a modern market facility at its centre. Mr Tete assured traders that the council and the assembly were collaborating closely to create a better trading environment for all.

He also appealed to market women and traders to cooperate with the committee during the data collection exercise to ensure that every trader was captured in the process.
