Akatsi (V/R), May 13, GNA – The Akatsi South Municipal Health Directorate has intensified public education on hypertension as part of activities marking World Hypertension Day and Hypertension Awareness Month.

The campaign, led by Mrs Justine Sefakor Alornyo, Municipal Director of Health, aims to encourage residents to regularly check their blood pressure and adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce the rising cases of hypertension and related complications in the municipality.

Speaking under the theme: “Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer,” Mrs Alornyo urged the public to take proactive steps towards maintaining healthy hearts and living longer lives.

She described hypertension as a “silent killer” because it often presents no warning signs but can lead to serious health conditions such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, vision loss, and heart failure.

The Directorate advised residents to monitor their blood pressure regularly, consume healthy meals with reduced salt intake, engage in regular physical activity, maintain a healthy body weight, avoid tobacco use and excessive alcohol intake, and adhere strictly to prescribed medications.

It also encouraged residents to know their blood pressure levels and seek early medical attention to prevent complications associated with the condition.

Officials of the Directorate, in an engagement with the Ghana News Agency, noted that small but consistent lifestyle changes could significantly reduce the risk of hypertension and improve overall well-being.

The Directorate further called on families, community leaders, and stakeholders to support the awareness campaign to help build healthier communities and promote national development.

“Healthy Hearts, Healthy Homes, Healthy Nation,” the campaign message stated.
