Accra, May 14, GNA – High jumper Esther Obenewaa won a silver medal for Ghana at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships.

The high jumper cleared 1.81 metres, which was her personal best, to grab a silver medal for the host nation.

Earlier in the day, Florence Agyemang claimed Ghana’s first medal of the championships.

Agyemang displayed some determination to power her way through the finish line to finish third in the women’s 400 metres final at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.

She clocked 51.87 seconds to take bronze, as Ethiopia’s Ayayba Aliy Ahmed won gold and Botswana’s Kamberuk Obakeng secured silver in the keenly contested race.

Alex Amankwah added to Ghana’s medal tally after securing bronze in the men’s 800m finals.

Amankwah finished the race with a time of 1:46:18 seconds to win Ghana’s second bronze medal at the competition.

The medals mark a massive boost for Ghana, especially after yesterday’s disappointment where they missed out on medals in the men’s 100m race.

Team Ghana would be hoping to put smiles on the faces of home fans as they compete in other track-and-field events in their quest for more medals.
