Tanzania plans tech-driven crackdown on illegal mineral trade

DAR ES SALAAM, April 27 (Xinhua/GNA) — Tanzanian authorities plan to deploy advanced technology, to monitor mineral production and trade as part of efforts to curb smuggling and boost revenues from the sector, Minister for Minerals Anthony Mavunde told parliament on Monday.

Presenting the ministry’s 2026/2027 budget estimates, Mavunde said new measures will include the use of helmets, equipped with specialized cameras for inspectors and valuers to enhance transparency and oversight, particularly in the tanzanite industry.

Authorities will also intensify inspections, strengthen mineral trading centers and enforce laws to combat illegal activities, the minister said.

In addition, Tanzania will promote gemstone auctions and exhibitions, including the Arusha Gem Fair, to position the country as a global hub for gemstone trade, the minister added.

The government will also support small-scale miners through financing, technology and formalization programs, he added.
