Takoradi, April 30, GNA – Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) II David Asah Darko, the Western Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), has advised the public to desist from attacking firefighters in their line of duty.
He said there had been several incidents of unwarranted attacks on firefighters, and fire equipment during fire outbreaks, and that such attacks compromised public safety.
He gave the advice when the Western Regional Fire Command organised a float on the principal streets of Takoradi as part of a week-long activities to mark this year’s International Firefighters Day (IFFD).
It was held on the theme: “Attack on firefighters and equipment is attack on public safety: End assaults and protect the firefighter.”
ACFO II Darko said: “More often than not, people attack firefighters on fire grounds because they think we delay. However, some of these issues are sometimes beyond our control and the people do not understand.
Then they tend to attack firemen, but I want to say that when you attack firemen you attack public safety because you prevent them from fighting the fire.”
The Western Regional Fire Commander noted, however, that despite these challenges firefighters would continue to discharge their mandates diligently for safe and fire incident-free communities for all.
As part of the IFFD commemoration, the command organised radio sensitisation on fire safety and stakeholder engagement on appreciating heroes among others and would be climaxed on May 4,2026 with a durbar at the Western Regional Headquarters in Fijai.
IFFD is a day set aside to honour and celebrate the selfless and dedicated sacrifices and services of firefighters around the world.
