LIMA, April 9 (Xinhua/GNA) — Peru has declared a state of emergency in several districts in the southern region of Tacna, which borders Chile, to combat crime and violence, the presidency said Thursday.
The measure, covering the districts of Palca, Tacna, La Yarada-Los Palos and Tarata, will remain in effect for 60 days, according to a decree published in the official gazette El Peruano.
During the emergency, the National Police will maintain control of public order with support from the armed forces, while authorities may restrict constitutional rights, including freedom of movement, assembly and personal security.
Mass public events will require prior authorization, and security committees in the region will remain in permanent session to coordinate anti-crime measures.
Authorities will also conduct continuous patrols along the Peru-Chile border, including drone surveillance, and step up operations at unauthorized crossing points to prevent criminal activity.
The decree includes provisions for special protection of vulnerable groups, such as children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with disabilities.
