Melbourne, Aprl 19, (dpa/GNA) – One person has died and another is in a critical condition, after a car reportedly drove into a group of people near a comic convention, in the Australian city of Melbourne on Saturday.
Police said the car veered onto the pavement, just before 5 pm (0700 GMT) and hit the two pedestrians. One of them died at the scene of the accident, while the other was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A man has been detained and is being questioned. The circumstances of the incident remain unclear, and an investigation is ongoing, police said.
Australian broadcaster 9News, reported that the incident occurred near the Supanova comic convention, where thousands of visitors were present. Witnesses told the broadcaster that the car had driven at high speed into a group of people.
Police have cordoned off a large crime scene in the south-eastern city.
