One dead as five teens in a car plunge into Frankfurt’s Main River

Frankfurt, April 25, (dpa/GNA) – An 18-year-old boy has died, after a car carrying five youngsters plunged into the Main River in Frankfurt overnight, German police said on Saturday.

A 17-year-old girl is in a critical condition, with both having been recovered by divers from the water. The other three passengers were able to rescue themselves independently and were taken to hospital by emergency services.

The car overturned from the quayside in the German financial centre’s eastern port late on Friday, plunging 8 metres into the water. An eyewitness called the emergency services.

“According to the information thus far, a vehicle drove towards the port basin for reasons unknown, broke through the protective barrier, fell into the north basin of the eastern port and sank to the bottom,” the police report said.

The five passengers were aged between 17 and 18 years old.

The car has since been hauled out of the water. Police are awaiting a report.
