Koforidua, April 27, GNA – Preparations are far advanced for Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, to host the 2026 May Day celebration at the national level.

Mrs Phyllis Agyeman, the Eastern Regional Secretary of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), confirmed this to the Ghana News Agency, saying that national and regional planning committees had agreed on the venue for the parade, the Koforidua Jackson Park.

May Day is celebrated annually on May 1 across Ghana to honour the sacrifices, struggles and achievements of workers.

This year’s celebration, themed: “Pivoting to Growth, Jobs, and Sustainable Livelihoods: Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,” is expected to be attended by President John Dramani Mahama and his entourage, alongside national leaders of the TUC.

Mrs Agyeman explained that the planning committee, made up of TUC Industrial Relations Officers and representatives of Organised Labour, had already put arrangements in place for bands, seating, and the dispatch of invitations to guests and dignitaries.

“Our region is privileged to host this year’s May Day parade. I therefore call on heads of departments, agencies, and organisations to contribute towards making the event a success,” she said.

She stressed the importance of political neutrality at the event, urging the public to avoid partisan attitudes so that everyone could attend freely and peacefully.

On security, the Secretariat assured participants that the Police and other security agencies would be deployed to ensure safety, while a medical team would be on standby to provide emergency assistance.

Mr Johnson Edmund Kyeremeh, the Eastern Regional Industrial Relations Officer, on his part, appealed to members of the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) and other workers to participate massively in the celebration to demonstrate solidarity.

He said strong participation would help strengthen the bond of brotherhood among workers and highlight their contribution to national development.
