Israel says four killed in southern Lebanon were Hezbollah members

Beirut, April 25, (dpa/GNA) – At least four people were killed on Saturday, when an Israeli strike hit a truck and a motorcycle in southern Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

The Israeli military said later that the victims were members of the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia. It said three of the people were driving in a vehicle loaded with weapons, and the fourth person was travelling on a motorbike.

The strike took place in Yohmour, Lebanese security sources said.

Earlier, the Israeli army again warned residents of some 59 villages and towns in southern Lebanon not to return there.

The air force also killed two armed Hezbollah fighters elsewhere in southern Lebanon, the military said, adding both posed a threat to Israeli soldiers on the ground in southern Lebanon.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported further shelling from Lebanon into Israel in the afternoon. It said one projectile was intercepted, whilst another crashed in an open area.

Rocket alerts were sounded in several towns in northern Israel. There were initially no reports of casualties or damage. Lebanese security sources stated that Hezbollah had fired rockets at Israel.

The ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia has just been extended, but remains fragile.

Both sides have accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement. Violent incidents and attacks continue to occur repeatedly.

Israeli soldiers are still stationed in southern Lebanon.

Under the current ceasefire agreement, the Israeli army is allowed to defend itself against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks, but is expected to refrain from carrying out “offensive” operations against targets in Lebanon.
