Accra, April 15, GNA – The Gabonese Republic has reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara, welcoming the historic adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797.
This was affirmed on Tuesday during a meeting in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates and Gabon’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, in charge of Integration and the Diaspora, Ms Marie-Edith Tassyla‑Ye‑Doumbeneny, who is on a friendship and working visit to the Kingdom.
Ms Tassyla‑Ye‑Doumbeneny reaffirmed Gabon’s full backing of the Moroccan Autonomy Plan, describing it as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute over the Sahara.
In a joint communiqué issued after the meeting, the Gabonese Foreign Affairs Minister welcomed the adoption of Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, noting that it enshrines the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, within the framework of the Kingdom’s sovereignty, as the sole serious, credible and sustainable basis for reaching a political solution to what she described as an artificial dispute.
She also recalled Gabon’s opening of a Consulate General in Laâyoune in January 2020, stating that the move reflects the growing international recognition of Morocco’s territorial integrity and underscores the strong and strategic partnership between the two countries.
Gabon’s renewed position forms part of the international momentum, led by His Majesty King Mohammed VI, in support of the autonomy plan and Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara.
