Anyakpor, April 07, GNA — Madam Catherine Dela Dzivenu, a Board Member of the Ghana Maritime Authority, has organised a Kenkey Festival and games for residents of Anyakpor in the Ada East District to climax the Easter celebrations.

The event, held on Emaus day at the Anyakpor School Park, attracted hundreds of youths, sports enthusiasts and community members.

Participants engaged in various traditional and recreational games, including playing cards, ludo, draughts, oware and other activities, with winners receiving cash prizes alongside the sharing of kenkey.

Addressing the gathering, Madam Dzivenu encouraged the youth to remain focused and make the most opportunities available to them.

She emphasised the need for a positive mindset, noting that progress and development required determination and collective effort.

“I am always driven by positivity and the desire to move forward. I need the support of the youth as we work together to bring development to our communities,” she said.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Dzivenu expressed appreciation for the overwhelming turnout, describing it as beyond her expectations despite several competing events in the area.

“I feel loved, appreciated and encouraged. The support has been amazing,” she said.

She assured residents of her commitment to organising more community-based programmes aimed at promoting unity, social cohesion, and development.

Asafoatseŋua Kotoko Debra V, Senior Warlord of the Kabiawe Kponor Clan, speaking at the event, urged the youth to take their education seriously, noting that lack of educational qualifications often limits access to opportunities.

Naana Lomoki Lomo I, Queen Mother of the Lomobiawe Clan, advised the youth to refrain from drug abuse, warning that substance use could derail their future.

She also cautioned parents against sending children to purchase alcohol or drugs, stating that such practices could expose them to harmful behaviours.

Winners of the various competitions received cash prizes, with top teams in the card games receiving GH¢2,000 each, while third-place teams received GH¢1,000. Participants in draught competitions were also rewarded, alongside other contributors to the games, with prizes that included cash awards and recognition for their efforts in promoting community engagement.

The event was attended by several traditional leaders and dignitaries, including Nene Tetteh Lanuer Okumo IV, Divisional Chief of the Dangmebiawe Clan; Asafoatse Hlamitse Kabutey Assem III; and Naana Oforiwaa Teiko Sogah Tswasam I, Asafoanye of Ohuewem.

The Kenkey Festival is expected to become a regular event aimed at strengthening community bonds and providing recreational opportunities for residents.
