Accra, April 29, GNA – Canada has affirmed its recognition of Morocco’s autonomy plan as a basis for a mutually acceptable solution to the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
A statement issued on Tuesday by Canada’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ottawa considers the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco as a “serious and credible initiative” capable of leading to a just and lasting settlement of the conflict.
The position was outlined following a telephone conversation between Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ms Anita Indira Anand, and Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Mr Nasser Bourita.
The Canadian ministry noted the importance of the Sahara issue to Morocco and referred to the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 on October 31, 2025, stressing that Canada would act in line with the resolution.
The statement underscored the need to reach a lasting, just and mutually acceptable political solution in accordance with the principles of the United Nations Charter and relevant Security Council resolutions.
Canada’s updated stance comes ahead of an official visit to Morocco by Minister Anand in the coming weeks, during which the two sides are expected to further discuss bilateral relations and deepen exchanges on the Sahara issue, the statement added.
