Accra, March 20, GNA—Alhaji Mohammed Baba Jamal, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, has expressed concern over the alleged denial of national identification documents to residents of Zongo communities, citing perceptions of foreignness based on names or backgrounds.

He said, “It is important that all of us take note of how people from the Zongos are sometimes seen as aliens or foreigners, and on that basis, many are being denied national ID cards, passports, and other identification documents just because of their names or ethnic backgrounds.”

Speaking to journalists in Parliament on Thursday, Alhaji Baba Jamal emphasized that communities like Nima had existed for generations, housing diverse ethnic groups who were fully Ghanaian.

“Denying citizens’ access to identification documents violates their rights and risks fostering tension and division in society,” he said.

The MP also praised President Mahama’s decision to introduce an additional public holiday for Muslims during Eid-ul-Fitr, calling it a thoughtful step toward inclusivity.

“We thank the President for adding one holiday to Eid-ul-Fitr. Previously, some people fasted for 29 days while others fasted for 30 days, which caused challenges. With the two holidays now, everyone can celebrate Eid in peace and harmony,” he said.

He highlighted Ghana’s strong interfaith harmony, with Muslims and Christians supporting each other’s celebrations, adding that “this unity is a source of pride,” he noted.
