Accra, March 7, GNA – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that a Ghanaian battalion position serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has come under missile attack in southern Lebanon amid the ongoing hostilities between Israel Defense Forces and Hezbollah.
A release issued by the Department of Public Relations of GAF in Accra, signed by Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director, said the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters in Lebanon was struck by two missiles between 1745- and 1752-hours local time on Friday.
Two Ghanaian soldiers sustained critical injuries while another was traumatised following the attack.
It said the Officers’ Mess facility at the battalion location was also hit and completely burnt down during the incident.
“The injured personnel are currently receiving treatment at the Level One Medical Bunker and are reported to be in stable condition,” the statement noted.
It sait arrangements were underway to evacuate the injured soldiers to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for further medical care.
The GAF assured the public that troops deployed at the mission area were safe and had taken shelter in underground bunkers amid the fragile security situation.
Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has formally protested the incident at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The Government also urged the parties involved in the conflict within the UNIFIL area of operations to be mindful of their responsibilities regarding the safety of all peacekeepers in the theatre.
